When it comes to cleaning kitchen sponges, most people only rinse them with water – a method that is certainly not sufficient to remove any harmful bacteria that may be present in the sponge. The EMSL Analytical Test Laboratory uses the following method to clean the kitchen sponges. This method kills 99.9% of the three dangerous bacterial strains most commonly found on kitchen sponges.
– Take a bucket and throw 3/4 cups of bleach into a litre of water
– Throw in your dirty sponge
– Leave it sitting for 5 minutes
– Remove the sponge and rinse thoroughly
On the next page you will find the test results of other commonly used cleaning methods.
